Host Organization Requirements
Is this program a good fit for your organization?
Internships are for university students who have not yet graduated or who have graduated within the last year. An internship may last up to 12 months.
To participate in the J-1 Intern Program, your organization must be able to provide a structured, practical training experience while complying with certain key program regulations. Because the purpose of the program is to foster professional exchange, the host organization is expected to ensure that the DS-7002 Training / Internship Placement Plan is followed for the duration of the program.
It’s about professional cultural exchange, not staffing
The J-1 intern visa offers international students and recent graduates the opportunity to develop skills and learn American business practices in a role that matches their academic studies. The applicant’s background and stated career goals must correlate to his or her training plan. Upon completion of the program, the applicant should return to his or her home country better equipped to meet the unique challenges of his or her field or profession.
The program is not intended to help organizations fill staffing needs. The training plan that you create should reflect an understanding of the intern’s needs, as well as those of your business.
