The DS-7002 Training/Internship Placement Plan

The formal training plan outlined on Form DS-7002 is required by the U.S. Department of State and is an essential part of the J-1 Visa program. Put together by the host organization, and agreed to by the participant, it helps to ensure that the intern will have a successful experience – valuable, relevant professional development, along with a better understanding of American culture.

The training plan clearly describes what the intern will be doing during his or her time with the host organization, what skills he or she will learn, how cultural exchange will be encouraged, and how his or her performance will be measured. It’s an important document that:

  • Details information about the host organization and nature of the position being offered, and serves as a formal, signed agreement between the participant and host organization
  • Charts the stages of professional development, and sets tasks and objectives to help interns, host organizations, and CIEE fully understand what’s expected
  • Ensures that the internship is relevant to the participant’s goals and background, and does not duplicate past experience
  • May be able to be extended once the initial program is complete, with approval and a supplemental plan

What does a good training plan look like?

As a J-1 sponsor, CIEE must ensure that the training program your organization is offering meets program regulations and guidelines. We will carefully review your training plan as part of the application process. We are looking to easily understand what the host organization does and the nature of the experience it will be offering the intern.

It’s important that the training plan be detailed. The intern (and CIEE) should understand what he or she will be doing on a day-to-day basis, know what skills he or she will be contributing to the company, and be aware of what the company is going teach him or her.
